“Joel’s story of Joan is a beautiful and passionate tale of two first-rate competitors who fought hard for their love.” –Billie Jean King, Social Justice Pioneer and Sports Icon

A month after she was orphaned at twenty-seven, Joan Edwards was diagnosed with lupus, a deadly disease that led one doctor to believe she would be dead by thirty-five. A year later, she met her future husband. This is Joel Drucker’s story, told in vignettes, about his and Joan’s twenty-eight-year romance, chronicling a relationship that was all at once a slumber party, therapy session and private joke. Don't Bet on It is an intimate, beautifully rendered tale of affirmation when all odds point towards loss, and of its defiance humor as escape, humor as confrontation, humor most of all as love.

Over the course of his 35-year writing career, Oakland-based Joel Drucker’s work has appeared in a variety of media outlets. These include broadcast venues such as HBO, CBS, Tennis Channel, as well as dozens of print publications, ranging from Tin House, Huffington Post and Salon to the San Diego Reader, Los Angeles Magazine, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, East Bay Express, Cigar Aficionado, Forbes FYI and People. His primary topics have been sports, popular culture and business.

This is his second book. His first book, Jimmy Connors Saved My Life, was published in 2004.

I got this as a free book from IHG rewards program - Holiday Inn's loyalty program. They don't have a great selection of interest but this sounded like an interesting short read. It was.

I'm always interested in anything of a medical nature, although I have no interest in tennis. It wasn't too much about tennis for me although I recognized the names mentioned so that was interesting.

It was very sad but also uplifting. Joel Drucker, who I'd never heard of until reading this book, strikes me as a very nice man. I really like him after reading this book. He was able to make me feel his pain, too. I was moved by his grief. What a kind man he must be. Caring and sensitive is how he came off to me just by the way he wrote of the woman he loves. I wonder if he's as nice a man in real life?

This is an easy read about a special relationship between two interesting people.

Don't Bet on It Single eBook Joel Drucker Reviews

I enjoyed this, and it's very engaging. It's a short book, but it's filled with the love between a husband and wife and how they faced an insidious disease together. It was a pleasant read, and I'll look for other short reads that are as interesting.
This account of the author's life with his wife, and her positive reaction to all the ill-health she endured is inspiring to anyone suffering in a similar way. Her life and death are described in great detail, with suitable quotes from other writers, poets and songs. It is not a book to be taken lightly.
This book should be mandatory life reading. It is a book of beautiful words that Joel and Joan shared. Then Joel shares them with us. But he brings us right into his heart, inviting us to feel the pain right along side him. I was there with him and hurt as I read each word. And I could feel his pain and mine thinking about loved ones I have lost. Thinking about loved ones I will lose and ultimately knowing that we all must go. It brings vividly clear how precious life is and important moments are.

We all want to hold onto both so much but moments are constantly coming and going. We want moments to freeze in time and last forever but they don't. The challenge is how do we make the most of them and hold on as long as we can?

Wow Joel has written a real masterpiece.
This is a book that you don't want to put down. Unlike most books where you read on to find out what will happen next, when you begin reading "Don't Bet on It" you already know how it will end. What is unexpected is how the story is told with humor, hope, and humanity. Like any good love story, you want to savor every scene in the book.

Joan Didion once said about writing "...the last sentence in a piece is another adventure. It should open the piece up. It should make you go back and start reading from page one." That's what Joel Drucker did with this book and with his last sentence - he made you want to begin again.
I had previously read Drucker's book on Jimmy Connors and found it quite entertaining. Unaware of this love story with wife and of her tragic death I felt this would be a good follow-up read and it was. Tragic, sad, compassionate and loving would best describe this book. And he didn't make the mistake most do of feeling he needed to write to a perfect size of book. He wrote his story, longer than a short but shorter than a novella, and it perfectly conveys his love and loss.
A moving and nuanced meditation on the nature of love, memory, grief and, ultimately, resilience. Joel Drucker’s experience as a seasoned tennis journalist provides the engaging detail; his big heart provides the rest. I read the entire book through in one sitting. Much more than a memoir of loss, it also a story of hope, tennis, music, cheese and plums, and Drucker’s constant and enduring affection for the amazing Joan and for life itself.
Joan and I grew up together and were close childhood friends. I was older and once I started junior high we lost touch. The last time I saw Joan was at the visitation when her mother died. We held each other and cried.

About a year or so ago, I googled Joan with the hopes of reestablishing contact. Instead I found her obituary.

Recently a mutual friend told me about Joel's book. It was like having Joan back again and spending sometime with the adult Joan I never knew. It is obvious to anyone who reads this that Joan and Joel loved each other very much.

Thank you, Joel, for letting me spend a little time with m]y childhood playmate. Your story has made me miss her very much and to feel sad that we drifted apart.
