Eben Holden; a tale of the north country Irving Bacheller William Randolph Hearst John C 1858 Eckel 9781171609049 Books Reviews
This is a tale from 115 years ago set in the author's Northern NY boyhood area. For such an old style of writing, it captures the reader's interest from the beginning, then develops an adventure tale as good as any. This is an especially good read if you have interest in the early history of Northern NY's St. Lawrence County.
Great book.
This was a favorite of my Mother's. I have her copy but it is very fragile and coming apart so I got this on my . I love my .
This was not a boring book, but it's more like a children's book. I'm glad I read it though.
I love this book - the writing, the story - but this particular edition of the book leaves a lot to be desired. The print is ridiculously small and there are uncorrected typos.
When I was young, my uncle gave me this book which I believe he had in his youth. I read it several times and found it particularly interesting since I grew up in upstate NY. I am grateful to find it available again and re-reading it brought back many memories.
I only read this because Eben Holden was one of the first settlers of the area where I live, but I was very pleasantly surprised at the riveting tale of his trek across Vermont and upstate New York with his young orphaned nephew in tow. This book allowed me a peek inside the terribly arduous life of the early settlers, who needed a whole body of knowledge called "survival".
